Jennings provides excellent narration and characterization of a savage tribe of English yobs, who shudder and retch ingloriously to life under Amis's characteristic linguistic precision, but the highlight of this one is the welcome a young father gives to his newborn baby daughter. This is Amis at his zenith and may explain his formidable allure to women famously noted by his pal, Christopher Hitchens, in his memoirs, Hitch-22.
