Charles Finch is a favorite author of mine, and I've read most of his work (I think). I've never had much interest in tales at sea, no matter what century, and was unsure about this one. But it is a great read. The mystery and the depiction of life on a sailing ship together make for a fascinating and engrossing story. I recommend it.

This is actually the 2nd time I've read this, & it's still diverting. I could not guess who was the murderer. However, I'm not going to buy my own personal copy. There is a recurring tic throughout--for example, on page 32: "What he couldn't know, of course, was that the first murder was less than a day away." On page 123: "Only the next morning did he hear that the first breath of that most dreaded movement had been whispered on board: mutiny." Annoying!
