Paris, 1927. In the heady years before the crash, financiers drape their mistresses in Chanel, while expatriates flock to the avant-garde bookshop Shakespeare and Company. One day in July, a young American named Rafaela Fano gets into the car of a coolly dazzling stranger, the Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka. Struggling to halt a downward slide toward prostitution, Rafaela agrees to model for the artist, a dispossessed Saint Petersburg aristocrat with a murky past.

I too almost gave up on the book midway through. It dragged a bit but it ended up keeping me interested enough to want to finish it. I really enjoyed Part 2 from Tamara's point of view. Her suspicions and thought process were really well portrayed. What I found funny was the standard blurb from the publisher and the author that the characters in the book are purely fictional and any resemblance to real persons aliver or dead is purely coincidental. This book is very much based on very real persons. I have always liked de Lempicka's painting and now, after reading this book, I have a new appreciation for their author and the models she used. If you like the paintings, it is worth your while to read this book.

A really interesting premise and I especially enjoyed the first 1/3 of the novel. However, around the middle the plot starts to get a bit muddled and drags on for quite awhile. In some parts I was very confused by the author's writing (dialogue can be difficult to decipher), but overall enjoyed the story.

Poorly written, I wanted to put it down several times, but I was curious about the painter, Lempicka. 2 stars max!
