The challenges we face can be difficult even to think about. Climate change, the depletion of oil, economic upheaval, and mass extinction together create a planetary emergency of overwhelming proportions. Active Hope shows us how to strengthen our capacity to face this crisis so that we can respond with unexpected resilience and creative power. Drawing on decades of teaching an empowerment approach known as the Work That Reconnects, the authors guide us through a transformational process informed by mythic journeys, modern psychology, spirituality, and holistic science. This process equips us with tools to face the mess we're in and play our role in the collective transition, or Great Turning, toa life-sustaining society.

If you want a guide to help you 'face the mess we're in without going crazy', Active Hope is a good start. I first read this in early 2016, found it useful, especially the 'spiral' model: starting with gratitude, honoring our pain for the world, seeing with new eyes & going forth.

Revisited the book in post-election December 2016 & thought, "this could help." Started a very small group of friends who met (mostly) weekly, working through the book, doing some exercises, not others depending on our preferences. While the book is uneven, it was an excellent experience. We finished the book after ~8 wks, deciding then to 'go forth' by taking one project (plastics recycling) forward for our little community by sharing info, letting people know about new opportunities (e.g., recycling garden plastics, clamshells, even film) that curbside collection doesn't allow.

I loved this book. It is so important to draw on resilience and creativity in times of despair. Books like this can be true lifeboats.

I highly recommend this great book...still reading it and think it is masterfully written on a topic that we all need all the help we can get. Keeping yourself sane in this crazy world by loving yourself and loving our planet is the most pressing activity of our times. Macy is a wonderful human being. I have heard her speaking and she embodies the wisdom of our ages.
