There's a grassroots movement in tiny homes these days. The real estate collapse, the economic downturn, burning out on 12-hour workdays #150; many people are rethinking their ideas about shelter #150; seeking an alternative to high rents, or a lifelong mortgage debt to a bank on an overpriced home. Homes on land, homes on wheels, homes on the road, homes on water, even homes in the trees. There are also studios, saunas, garden sheds, and greenhouses.

There are 1,300 photos, showing a rich variety of small homemade shelters, and there are stories (and thoughts and inspirations) of the owner-builders who are on the forefront of this new trend in downsizing and self-sufficiency. You can buy a ready-made tiny home, build your own, get a kit or pre-fab, or live in a bus, houseboat, or other movable shelter. Some cities have special ordinances for building "in-law" or "granny flats" in the back yard. There are innovative solutions in cities, such as the "capsules" in Tokyo.

If you're thinking of scaling back, you'll find plenty of inspiration shown by builders, designers, architects, dreamers, artists, road gypsies, and water dwellers who've achieved a measure of freedom and independence by taking shelter into their own hands.

Interesting read , filled with many good pictures of tiny and wee homes , of all description. Just not practical in most peoples circumstances. But if a person was so inclined to want to do this way of living , there certainly are lots of entries in this book . If nothing else , enjoyed it for the pictures .

fascinating! i couldn't put this one down!
my only concern was that i would have liked more details on the power and plumbing details. but maybe many of these houses didn't have adequate facilities....

This book has lots of photos which is really important for this subject matter. But many of the homes were very alternative and to me seemed a step backwards. We have the technology to be able to create very small and comfortable homes that are state of the art in energy efficiency. When tiny homes are associated with primitive living it is a big turnoff. Let's create tiny homes that go forward not backward.

Interesting but not practical in most cases. Many municipalities have minimum square footage requirements, and then there is meeting the local building codes.

If you own a few hundred acres of bush in northern Ontario and want a roof, then you may want to use some of the ideas in this book.

a truly inspirational book that lauds living more simply in terms of housing, what we need and what is really important. A tribute to a more sustainable and certainly cheaper way of living which has a degree of appeal across all peoples-regardless of financial status. Or maybe it will just appeal to old hippies!

Fun to read, but very few are practical. A few extra cubic feet of storage space would immensely improve most of the models, and avoid the chaos.
