Add a CommentAs others have mentioned, this is a very quick and funny read. I may have heard about this book in Sarah Hepola’s Blackout (highly recommend). Kristen Johnston, perhaps best known for her role on the tv show 3rd Rock from the Sun, in a self-deprecating, jokey, intimate way, invites the reader into a recounting of her drug use and resulting life-threatening stomach surgery and lonely recovery in a drab London hospital. Johnston establishes an easy trust and rapport. She describes a difficult time in her life while offering hope and humor along the way. I agree with the comment below that it would have been nice to have learned more about the author and some deeper insights looking back on her experiences- how about a part 2 called Hearts?
This was a very quick read! You can easily read it in one day. That being said it is an interesting look at addiction BUT it would have been nice to learn about Kristen as a person. I felt like after reading 200 plus pages I still have no idea who she is other than a recovering addict.
GUTS is a quick read, but it goes deep. Johnston is a terrific, quirky, comic actress and a fine writer. She grew up masking an inner world of hurt with alcohol and pills until her world (and her guts) literally exploded. She leads us gently through the portal of hell with a lot of funny stuff at the beginning, but when she gets down to business it's quite something. This is a short but harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of survival, and also, you'll laugh out loud a lot.
Guts. I enjoyed this book of ones journey, while being secretly afflicted with an addiction. Especially from one of my favorite actresses, Kristen Johnston. This book helps solidify a sober person's will, and can help addicted people achieve sobriety and thrive. Kristen is an avid @twitter poster, and can be reached @kjothesmartass. Recommend this book to others, and enjoy!
Not the book to read if you're looking for campy behind the camera stuff from 3rd Rock, but a honest insight into a funny lady's confronting her demons and her mortality. Well written, great read
One of my favourite memoirs!! Kristen is so honest, so funny and very very likeable! Highly recommend this one.
Good book..I was not familur with Kristen Johnston.andm thought I might have troubles followingthe book...but didnt the story is good..very well written..A very funny and talented girl...who got off course and ended up doing drugs..Very funny truthful author..well written,,I would definaetly recommend!
Wonderful. Funny. Honest. I may have also liked this book, I confess, because I've had a lot of abdominal surgery, and it's rare I've read about anyone else who's also gone through this (not, I hasten to add, for the same reason!).
