Do the Work

Our enemy is not lack of preparation; it's not the difficulty of the project, or the state of the marketplace or the emptiness of our bank account.

The enemy is resistance.

The enemy is our chattering brain, which, if we give it so much as a nanosecond, will start producing excuses, alibis, transparent self-justifications and a million reasons why he can't/shouldn't/won't do what we know we need to do.

Start before you're ready.

Negative stars, if I could. 6,000 words, of which the title is the only useful advice. While short as an op-ed piece, it cost someone 12.99, and in these few words he managed to be both self-aggrandizing and sexist.

And if this advice (which is so mushy and imprecise and conflicting, I'm not entirely sure what it is) worked so well for him, why is his entire life's output only eight novels and six screenplays? Obviously, he did not "do the work" himself often at all.

Full of mystical new age nonsense like "the universe is against you" and "the universe is actively rooting for you." Oh, please. The universe has no intent or caring about anything, much less one member of a short-lived species on a tiny plant in the outskirts of a middling galaxy. Get over yourself, dude. And why is he so obsessed with his testicles?

A simple, helpful, positive reminder. Definitely motivating, if you need your mental butt kicked.

"The Artist's Way" distilled and written in an informal, punchy style. Still good advice.
