It actually look me a little bit longer to get through this manga since it has more of a relaxed, quiet, slow pace to it. But once I got into the flow, it was interesting and endearing. The main premise is rather simple (boy is haunted by yokai, because his grand mother oppressed them, must return all their names to them so they may be free from serving him), and I hope to see more layers and depth soon. It really showcases Japanese culture, and how much spirits and such are engraved in their culture. I personally enjoyed the last story the most. Natsume is a good main character; I enjoy seeing him interact with yokai and how he must struggle with his gift (or curse). The supporting cast was sufficient (Nyanko Sensei is ADORABLE XD). I suppose I'll keep reading.

At first, I did not find this manga interesting enough to read, but as I read further, I decided that it is really good. This manga is so beautifully written, the main character is an awesome guy and I recommend it to anybody who likes a manga that does not have too much romance but, is really nice and refreshing; it makes you think.

This is the first manga book I've ever read, recommended to me by the teen librarian at the Broadview Branch. The illustrations are beautiful and dreamy, and the storyline equally so. It might sound from the description like this is a story about a boy fighting monsters, but it isn't. It is more about people (and mythological creatures) solving their problems and learning to work together while learning about themselves. I thought it was great, even though I haven't read much other manga to compare it to. Besides, the lucky cat Nyanko Sensei is so cute!

I enjoy the overall premise of the story, as it presents with a great atmosphere, but best for a lighthearted read. Character development is lacking, and I have yet to feel captivated by the characters.

A good idea, but a little anemic and confusing. Each story is about 10 to 20 percent too long and the drawing is only adequate for the most part. Will probably give the next volume a try but will wait for awhile first. It's chief virtue is a certain gentle whimsy, at least so far.

With friends like these, enemies are overkill. R to L (Japanese Style). Takashi Natsume can see the spirits and demons that hide from the rest of humanity. He has always been set apart from other people because of his gift, drifting from relative to relative, never fitting in. Now he is a troubled high school student who has come to live in the small town where his grandmother grew up. And there he discovers that he has inherited more than just the Sight from the mysterious Reiko.

Takashi Natsume has always been able to see spirits and supernatural creatures, but they all seem to want him dead! While taking shelter in a shrine, he meets a demon named Nyanko who explains that Natsume’s grandmother also saw spirits- and trapped them by writing their names in book. Now the spirits want revenge and their freedom.

Although Nyanko is trapped in the body of a ceramic cat, he is a powerful spirit who agrees to be Natsume’s bodyguard in exchange for possession of the book after his death. Many strange spirits now appear, looking for Natume to grant them their freedom…

Other: The spirits talking of "carousing" and drink sake (with Nyanko Sensei getting drunk). Some people may find the Eastern ideas here strange (they go against my beliefs), as the essentials to the plot are yokai, spirits, shrines, cleansing spells, monks, idols, etc.

Sexual Content: When spirits tackle Natsume to eat him, another spirit remarks he's being "sexually harassed".
