Eig presents a very sympathetic account of America's most favourite gangster. The most unsavoury aspects of Al's chosen vocation are glossed over and he's portrayed as a loving family man who provided a service that most wanted. No one comes across as heroic in this saga - especially Elliot Ness and the politicians, judges and law men who conspired to put Capone away for tax evasion. As an aside an old timer who lived in Windsor told some lively stories about the time he worked as a mechanic across the river, concentrating exclusively on maintaining Capone's fleet of trucks. He had not one bad word to say about Capone who maintained his workforce during the depression. He said Capone did more for the working man during this period than either the Canadian or American governments. This is an interesting story but in the end it leaves too much unanswered about public enemy # 1.
