In the intervening years between the trilogy called The Dragon Chronicles Susan Fletcher seems to have distilled her writers' sensibilities in a fine brew. While I (as an adult reader) loved the Dragon Chronicles original trilogy, I am really knocked back by all she got right in this one. Having loved dragon stories since I first encountered Anne McCaffrey in the late '70's, I have my own particular standards which Susan Fletcher has met and exceeded. Plotting, pacing, characterization all superlative. And then hardest to describe the excellence of, the lonely pathos at the end,of the vast ages past that held all dragon kind and now,the sorrow and dignified resignation of the old and dying dragon dame shows us a brilliant allegory of what we are doing to so many species, it would seem without thought. But she does cause us to think of the vastness of what we really don't know yet about the interconnected web of life -- what we might be losing before we've even realized what that species part might have been before it is taken from life. This book works on so many levels, and should be treasured by young people certainly, but I am hoping other adults will look beyond the book's age category to see a truly fine story, that although called a fantasy resonates with genuine warmth and truth.

This is a pretty good book, though I do have to say that if its supposed to go with her other books I don't think it works with them that well.

Still a good read though :)
