This is a poignant novel by Dawn French which is told through the eyes of a mother and her two teenage children. Each chapter is narrated by a different voice, telling the story of a modern family, all living in their own separate bubbles, lurching towards meltdown.

Hated the first page, trite teenage diatribe, but kept reading and found myself laughing & I enjoyed the story for the most part - though every now & then it veered off again. Very funny in parts., overall not my favourite genre.

Anyone who has seen Dawn French on TV knows that she is an immensely talented comedian. So, truth be told, I was expecting of her first novel non-stop laughs. Well, it really isn't, but that doesn't translate into a lousy book. This is a great book, and not to worry, there are some genuinely funny moments. While the characters aren't entirely fleshed out, they are sympathetic, and despite their flaws, this is not a dysfunctional family by any means. This family loves each other dearly, but has their spats and fights like any other family. I like the way each chapter gives each character a voice to speak, so some events look very different from 2 differing perspectives. And a true sign of a good book is wanting more after the last page is turned. So I hope Ms French decides to go back and visit the Battle family in the future.

Just moved back from living in England and left my copy by accident. Thank goodness I can have a second read. Love this book. It's dead funny and spot on. Brilliant laugh for those who enjoy proper British humour.

Okay read, not much of a plot, characters don't really seem to grow or change and story doesn't really go anywhere. Mother has mid-life crisis while teenage kids try to define themselves.
Great use of British slang, but not as funny as I expected considering it's Dawn French.
