The Destruction of Convoy PQ 17Book - 1987
Both U.S. President Roosevelt and the British Admiralty bear responsibility for the loss of Convoy PO17. Pressure from Roosevelt caused the Admiralty to send the convoy to Russia through Norwegian waters during the winter period of nearly 24-hour sunlight. In response to strong German resistance, the Admiralty made the controversial decision to order the convoy to disperse, resulting in the loss of 24 out of 35 ships.
