Too contrived....Really have to suspend all disbeliefs.

For a film that is ostensibly a remake of the Otto Preminger 1962 movie "Advise and Consent" this film has a spectacularly good script. In contrast to the lackluster performances of Henry Fonda and Charles Laughton in the original, Joan Allen's and Gary Oldman's performances are stunning. The script is nothing short of inspired brilliance; I cannot understand why someone of Rod Lurie's caliber would later waste his talent on a remake of Sam Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs".
The only flaws I noticed in the plot were these:
1. If Jack Hathaway was strongly pro-choice, why would a committed antiabortionist like the Shelby Runyon character have wanted to groom and mentor Hathaway for the vice presidency?
2. When Jack Hathaway recruited an ex-military operative to drive off a bridge into the river, she would have carefully prepared for this dangerous assignment. Why then, did she drown trying to open her car door? The standard procedure in such situations is to brace shoulders against the headrest, bend knees and bring feet up, kick hard against the windshield until it pops out, then propel yourself feet-first through the aperture and out across the hood. Someone with military training would surely have known this.

Interesting take on a woman running for higher office. Smart, adept, the inside view,. In politics that gets messy and ugly. Especially applicable during the election in the U.S. now, 2016.

Bored me to the point I could not finish it. politics does that to me though & I often find thrillers too slow. Only watched at the behest of a friend. Don't recommend if you don't like politics, or thrillers. Not something I'm interested in. Not leaving star rating because of this.

A smart and entertaining political thriller!

Watch as the United States' first female vice-president fights back in an ugly character assassination battle, full of revelations, intrigue, and suspense.

Viewer discretion advised.

Amazingly creepy and well done performance from Gary Oldman as Shelly Runyon.

A great movie. Its true that some of the characters are beyond the realm of belief as they are are not your stereotypical immoral, sleazy politician (tragic really) but if you want to believe that there are honest politicians out there then this is the movie for you.

Gary Oldman's performance is brilliant. However, this Democrat-leaned political thriller turned out cheesy-Hollywood-fairy tale. The President Jeff Bridges and VP nominee Joan Allen are too good to be true. In reality, the interest group with big money is the king maker, and the politicians serve them. In this movie, such interest group is non-existence; President knows everything and he makes right decisions. This movie could be a truly first-rate political thriller, if not simplified as good honest politicians vs dishonest bad ones.
