maclean could not be said to be a 'locations' writer. nevertheless, he manages quite well to convey the atmosphere of the Dutch countryside. the mood of the film is eery, and foreboding. of course, of course, it is not a film, per se, but it is a book so alive that it reads as if you were watching a film.
