This is an excellent book and certainly gives a more nuanced picture of the Countess of Shrewsbury than the norm (which tend to emphasize the 'shrew' part of her title). One generally hears about Bess as a termagant start-to-finish and this books makes her a more three-dimensional person - still not someone you'd want to cross - but not an Elizabethan Cruella de Ville either...
