I really enjoyed this book. Although sad in some places.

I have not read a book based off of historical fact in a long time. It was refreshing and unnerving in a sense when learning about the fate of the Capet dynasty. When I began reading the novel, I could not help but feel that perhaps if King Louis and Marie Antoinette had spent a little less money, or even gone so far as to make charitable donations and attend charitable functions their lives could have been spared. At the same time it is sad to think that Parisians could be disloyal enough to blindly execute innocent people that tried and had their best interests at heart. Not everything always goes as planned. It makes you feel as though their own people are the traitors, and the author describes war and massacre against the monarchy in an uncanny detail. I really enjoyed this book more than I thought and will consider reading more historical fiction in the future.

Enjoyed this account of Marie Antionette's life. I was inspired to know more about her after seeing Sofia Coppola's movie, and this historical fiction filled in some gaps for me. Although hated by many, M-A does become somewhat of a victim in this account, but moreso a real human being.
