Award-winning book. It seemed very chatty in the beginning, as if the author was trying to make the reader comfortable before getting into a discussion that will challenge common ideas about the reality of the divisions we identify between human kinds. It soon gets meaty. A broad range of studies and experiments is cited as evidence that the human ability to categorize is a strength, and even our categorization of people, our tribalism, is a strength for good as well as for evil. "In-group" and "Out-group" are not inevitably enemies. The ability to recognize "tribes" actually increases the number of people we can peacefully relate with;once we learn the tribal ways of one member, we don't have to learn them all over again with each person. The most important thing to remember, which the author drives home again and again, is that all our groupings are fluid and ever-changing; we group people by how we relate to them, and then rationalize the grouping by identifying common characteristics. One of "Us" can become one of "Them" as soon as we are in competition for a resource; one of "Them" can become one of "Us" as soon as we need their help toward a common goal.
