What is a western? Watch this sumptuous operatic epic: Trains and railroads; land grabs; hired guns; violence; hated villain (one of the most hated characters in cinema); man with no name (harmonica player); Robber barons from the East; Damsel taking charge (tough and beautiful prostitute); gun fights (more killings); The Colorado Plateau (Monument Valley, Utah).

Notes:
-Pundits considered Frank (Fonda) one of the most hated movie villains in the same league as John Doe (Kevin Spacey) in "Seven 1995."
-5 stars rating from two of my most trusted library users JackPurcell Apr 05, 2015 and Monolith Aug 23, 2012.

Some reviewers complain that this movie is too long and boring. I think the long runtime helps immerse the viewer in the Old West experience in a way that no other western has done. The excruciatingly slow pace, especially in the opening 12-minute sequence, captures the pace of life of that time period. Having no phones no lights no motor cars slowed life waaay down. One of the reasons this movie is considered one of the greatest westerns ever is that it artfully incorporates this fact into a tapestry of themes that also include class, loyalty, revenge and the inevitable price of progress. With so many layers being brought to life in this film it would have been criminal to artificially quicken the pace to fit into a 90-minute feature. What next? Edit Lonesome Dove down to 42 minutes? How about Das Boot as a YouTube ad?

Sergio Leone's violent epic Western is an essential masterpiece.

I know this is considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, western films in history. The visuals are amazing, especially considering how long ago it was made. The soundtrack is quintessentially 'Western'. But even with all that, after watching this really, really, really long movie, my only thoughts were 'meh...that was ok'. The visuals and sounds are amazing, but there was too much 'nothing happening' in this movie for me to really enjoy it. You can only have so many scenes where two people just stare at one another angrily. Cut down, this would have made an incredible 90 minute movie. It's a revenge story wrapped around a tale of the darker side of the early railroad and boomtown industries. There's even a moderate amount of gunslinger action. But that's the single turkey slice in a drawn out, harmonica playing, brow furrowing, anger glaring-bread sandwich. It's not a bad movie, and I think many future westerns took a lot of influence from it. But if you get bored easily, you may want to skip this one.

A classic to be sure, as are most of Sergio Leone's movies.

Five stars on rotten tomatoes and imdb. It wasn't that good. It was only ok. Haunting story of family's murder also brutal and overlong. It was almost 3 hours. It will be the longest 3hours of your life. BORING. VERY OVER RATED.

As this is considered one of the all-time great Westerns, i was trembling with anticipation when it finally arrived after it'd been on hold over a month.

What a letdown! Hard to believe the Guardian named this the #1 Western of all time. I guess, if your priorities are atmosphere and art direction. Mine aren't. I could probably name 30 Westerns i like better--the only #1 for this film is #1 most overrated

Tons of quotes in IMDb already. Of course, some of the priceless ones are from non-verbal acts, from tiny twitch of facial muscles to loud BANGs:

Snaky (at the train station with two gunslingers, and three horses): "Frank sent us." Harmonica: "Did you bring a horse for me?" Snaky: "Well... looks like we're... (snickers) ...looks like we're shy one horse." Harmonica: "You brought two too many."
