An enjoyable romp with a fellow who finds himself thrust on an adventure running away from service of a War God (not one that he has ever considered even worshiping let alone serving) who wishes to make him His the first champion of his race in a millennium, and trouble follows him and his friend all the way. By the end of the book I could only hope that this will be the first book of a long series.

Weber's take on sword and sorcery might be weaker than the Honor Harrington series, but not by so much that you'd notice. He has fun taunting the cliches of the genre, but doing so respectfully, even while paying homage to those who went before. Fewer pages for far better payoffs than George RR Martin has ever delivered.
