Add a CommentI found "Nobody's Baby but Mine" on the Staff recommendation shelf at the library and had never heard of the author (but I explore one new author per month so she was it). From the moment I opened the book, I was hooked and had some major laugh-out-loud moments. This novel would make a terrific date movie and I am truly looking foward to reading more of Phillips. Dr. Jane is a brilliant PHD who tricks a NFL star (but dumb) "warrior" to impregnate her figuring once the deed was done, she would never see him again thereby avoiding messy relationships. You can also expect some really touching moments and yes, I'll admit it, the final chapters made me cry. Bravo, Ms. Phillips!
I was actually surprised at how good of a book this was: it had intelligence, comedy, heart... It was the first few chapters that presented all the troubles with their horrible writing. I went to put the book down several times before page 100 (landmark where I make these decisions) but I felt compelled to continue due to an interesting premise and, more accurately, the self-imposed pressure to read a book purchased for me by a family member. It did turn: by page 150, I was smiling; by page 200, I had giggled a few times and by page 300, I didn't want to put it down. All of the supporting characters were important and well-developed, complete figures that made the book and lent themselves to understanding the main characters. However, I think the reason I found this book on a clearance table is the terrible beginning, which was not well thought out or well written - too many people would give up. If you have a chance, keep going: the last 200 pages are quite crisp and what one should expect from the genre.
