Add a CommentThis movie could have been amazing, but it was too long by at least 30 minutes. The question is how much time do we need to watch Lesley Manville express her emotions? The acting was great -- just needed to be edited down (and I normally don't mind slow-paced movies).
Not up to Leigh's usual standard. The wonderful, sly humor usually found in his films is missing here, but this is a touching film about loneliness. Excellent cast though and worth watching.
Another remarkable effort from Mr.Leigh.The dialogue is spot on and the characters both believable and well developed. A stand-out performance from Lesley Manville.
Not among the best that Mike Leigh has done, but still basically an enjoyable look at a British family over a year and their circle of acquaintances.
Nice enough, and Ruth Sheen does a first rate acting job, but I'm wondering what the point was.
Save yourself two hours of your life and skip this boring film. I had to use English subtitles to understand what the characters were saying half the time. I kept wondering where the film was headed and then it abruptly ended with no resolution whatsoever.
I loved this movie in theatres and had to see it again on DVD. Wonderful acting by Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen. Their characters are a long-time married couple. They do an amazing job at such: you really feel their love for each other throughout the movie. All of their friends are not as content as they are, and the movie spans 4 seasons of their life. Excellent Script, Direction, and Cinematography. The movie is a gem! Must See!
Skip It - Another Year (2010) 129 min. This critically acclaimed film from director Mike Leigh comes across to this viewer as extremely bland with lots to say but done in such an uninspired way. I was left numb after the first hour and noticed that this film is over 2 hours long. The only exception to the drudgery of this film is Imelda Staunton, who early on in the film visits her doctor and its clear from her demeanor that she is quite depressed. I would've wished that the film focused more on her; she was brilliant. I've seen four other Mike Leigh films and only Vera Drake (1982) is a "Must See". The others: Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) "Fair", Secrets & Lies (1996) "Fair", and Topsey Turvy (1999) "Skip It" are not worth your while. Overall assessment for Another Year: over-long and tiresome but with great acting throughout. Drop this film and watch Vera Drake instead.
